Three Broken Promises by Monica Murphy

This is the story of Colin and Jen, two people that have known each other for most of their lives, but lost touch once Jen's brother, Danny, died in Iraq. Jen felt so lost and unwanted by her parents once Danny died that she ran away from home. She thought she would find happiness or at least a new life, one filled without the cloud of Danny's death hanging over her head, but she didn't. She fell into a world where she didn't belong and was on the downward spiral until, Colin, her Knight-in-Shining-Armor came to her rescue. He saved her; giving her a job at his restaurant, The District, and a place to stay, his house. Everything was falling into place, Colin thought, until it wasn't.

After months of being away from Jen's former life, her past begins to make appearances and Jen can't handle it. She needed to leave, she needed to keep her secrets intact even if she had to leave Colin, the man she loves behind. So she gives Colin her notice that she's quitting, giving him a month to find a new waitress then she was leaving town. But Colin doesn't want her to leave, he needs her. He needs her when the nightmares and the secrets become too much in the dead of night; he needs her to hold him, comfort him, help fight his demons. The thing is Colin doesn't know how to get Jen to stay. Will Jen be able to keep her secrets intact and leave town or will Colin be able to break down her walls and make her stay?

This is a lovely story of two people fighting their demons on their own, demons that would easily be defeated if they fought them together. Something they don't realize until it could be too late. Their demons were both sad and heart-breaking, but I couldn't connect with them because I don't think their was enough raw emotion. I didn't feel like these demons effected them enough on an emotional level, at least I didn't see it when I read it.

I wasn't sucked in right away with this story like I was with Drew and Fables, maybe it's because the story started out slow, but once I got further into the story, I got sucked in, even though when the "twists" came or when the secrets came out, I wasn't surprised. This story was predictable, but a fun and easy read. I think you should read Drew and Fable's story first, but you don't have to. This isn't my favorite out of the series, but it was a good read anyways.
